College athlete charged in assault of teammate at practice

#

A college basketball player accused of repeatedly punching a teammate at practice, knocking out some teeth and leaving him unconscious, has been charged with misdemeanor assault in Ohio.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports University of Akron redshirt sophomore center Khadim Gueye pleaded not guilty after being arrested this week for the allegedly unprovoked Dec. 16 attack witnessed by coaches and teammates.

Gueye and his attorney wouldn't comment at his arraignment Friday.

Athletics director Larry Williams says Akron suspended Gueye, a 22-year-old from Senegal who is sitting out this season after transferring from South Carolina.

Coach John Groce says he'll "let the process take its course," but he isn't commenting more, citing players' privacy.

The injured player, Cleveland native Mark Kostelac, missed two games but returned to play in late December.

“struck the victim multiple times unprovoked while the victim was not looking.”
    Please deport him promptly.

University & college police forces across our nation need to be striped of their police authority so that cases like this & all others can be properly investigated by local police agencies that are not sworn to first & foremost protect the institutions reputation & that of it's athletic teams. Misdemeanor charges would never have been allowed by a legitimate police & prosecutorial system.

I am going to guess he is in this country LEGALLY and committing crimes. Time to deport him.

Felony assault. What do you have to do to get a felony assault charge in that town?
Many colleges seem to accept this kind of behavior from their students. Our future captains of industry, these violent thugs are. It's because schools are struggling to survive and it's the sports teams that keep them alive. So colleges will continue to accept these crimes.

Knocking out teeth and someone being unconscious? This is misdemeanor assault? Then what is felony assault, killing someone?

A red shirt transfer? Way to make an impression on your new team. I would be willing to bet he'll never appear in a game.

If you punch someone hard enough to knock out several teeth a "misdemeanor" charge seems inappropriate. I think it really should be a felony.

Has anyone else noticed the thug culture in college sports?

Now send him back home. A violent felony should be enough to cancel his VISA.
