Donations back name changes for schools honoring Confederacy

Virginia school officials have received a $20,000 donation to cover the costs of changing the names of three Petersburg elementary schools that now bear the names of Confederate leaders.

The school board plans to vote next month on a proposal to change the names of the A.P. Hill, J.E.B. Stuart and Robert E. Lee elementary schools.

A school spokeswoman told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the school system received a $20,000 check on Thursday. That's $2,000 more than the estimated cost of changing outdoor signs, replacing doormats and paying for other things to complete the name changes.

She said the donor wished to remain anonymous, but told her she felt called to make the donation for racial justice.

School officials said they didn't expect to see such large donations.

It is self-evident that these men did not fight for the United States of America, They fought against it. They may have been warriors, but in this cause they were not patriots.

They are not just innocent remembrances of a benign history. They purposefully celebrate a fictional, sanitized Confederacy; ignoring the death, ignoring the enslavement, and the terror that it actually stood for.

Classic example of inaccurate news: the schools do not honor the Confederacy, they are not named Confederacy high school or Confederate states of America elementary school, they honor American soldiers . Continuing to demonize a million American soldiers because they were born south of an imaginary line running east to west is inane. Was their cause wrong? Yes. So was Vietnam! Are we going to rip out the Vietnam Memorial because the cause was unjust? But is not the Vietnam war memorial : it is the Vietnam veterans Memorial. Just like the schools, it honors soldiers, not political causes.

For the right money would they change the names to Mercedes Elementary, Staples Elementary and Home Depot Elementary? This school district might be on to something here.

Yet in West Virginia there are over 50 buildings/monuments named for Robert Byrd or his wife - the Democrats that were proud members of the KKK. Go figure.
